Alternate Fuels > Industrial Gasifier

Till a few years back, gasifiers were essentially used to produce gaseous fuel out of solid fossil fuel. Easy availability of liquid fuel and gaseous fuel have made the gasifier technology obsolete. However for small decentralized power production use, wood based gasifier had become an alternative option. Problems with the cleaning of producer gas and derating of gas engine have made the demand of wood based gasifier meager.

Off late for large thermal application, biomass has become a very attractive option due to cleaner combustion. Firing of many biomass products having a very high moisture content (above 70%) has never been an attractive option and was done only as an abatement of pollution problems.

With the development of drying and densification technology, biomass gasifiers (burning biomass pellets & briquettes) have become quite a formidable option for thermal energy production.

In India and Africa, many industries are successfully using biomass in gasifiers on account of environmental consideration and ease of availability, after drying and densification. The major industries are:

  1. Distilleries (spent wash)
  2. DDGS (Distillers Dry Grain Solution)
  3. Press Mud Industry
  4. Coir Pith Industry
  5. Other waste processing industries

Gasifiers are the most clean burning option for using biomass.
