With the development of drying and densification technology, the same biomass is now being converted into pellets with high density, high calorific value and low residue. Thus pelletized and briquetted biomass often referred to as “bio coal” have become an economical and also environmentally sustainable alternative to fossil fuel.
In Asia and Africa, biomass has found foot hold in industrial gasifiers, Boilers, Industrial Furnaces and Kilns and for production of heat for drying in food processing industries. The use of biomass in the form of RDF is also gaining popularity in power plants.
In US and Europe, there is a huge potential of using biomass for thermal energy generation in ethanol industry, residential heating and power plants. Once the decentralized, privately funded pellet mills at the agro waste site gains popularity and large centralized biomass depots have been established, the industries using coal to generate thermal energy will find biocoal a very attractive and sustainable option.
